BA flight BA1344 2026-04-19

BA have just started a Heathrow-Guernsey route. They said it was their first flight on that route since 1980.

Checkin at Terminal 5 was bad. They couldn't find it from my passport.  I had to give my booking reference three times.  Then show the screen.  They were grumpy.  Security was bad, just very slow.

The flight was good.  All the crew except one were from Guernsey.  They served Guernsey butter.  The salad was fresh.  They served Champagne.  The napkin was made of cloth, not paper.

Lots of people were parked just north of the airport fence, to watch.  Some photographers and a Deputy were on the tarmac.  Customs and Immigration were present, but for a change did not harass me based on an incorrect hunch that I was smuggling drugs.  A choir in the arrivals area sang Flower Duet, the BA song.

the persistent idiocy of "privileged ports" on Unix

TCP and UDP have ports.  These are 16 bit; there are 65535 or so per IP address. These protocols don't care to differentiate between the ports.  Elsewhere, IANA presumes to operate a process to allocate "well-known" ports in the range 1-1023, "registered ports" in the range 1024-49151, and to reserve the remainder, 49152–65535, for "ephemeral" ports.  The caller end has to have a port, which is how replies get back within the virtual connection, and these are conventionally picked from the ephemeral range by the OS's networking stack. JT "their my" nonsense

Another example of the "your my" nonsense produced by corporations calling customers' things "my" things. Let's mark this for pronouns: In total, I've identified 12 correct pronouns, 6 incorrect pronouns, given from the wrong perspective, and one direct clash between a correct one and an incorrect one, in the form of "their my JT account".  This should be a dead giveaway that something is wrong. As well, observe this perfunctory, bossy, yet passive tone that they take.  "all customers are required" to such and such.  Let's try this.  "All telecoms providers are required to provide ipv6 service".  Oh, that didn't work.  "All entities are required to desist from calling other entities' things 'my'".  Oh, that didn't work either. This is the real pronoun crisis.

hardly any suitcases or shopping trolleys have brakes

 Taleb observed in Antifragile that it took 6000 years between the invention of the wheel, and someone putting wheels on luggage.  Sadly, castors without brakes result in a lot of rolling around.  This is getting worse each year, as the luggagetards seem to take unbounded delight in reducing the friction in their castors, but never add brakes.  Thousands of people are going round announcing they "work in luggage design", but not a single one has implemented the most obvious and beneficial "innovation" available to them. I have so far been unable to (spot test and) buy any luggage with brakes on the wheels, despite asking in several luggage shops.
