your my yallo

A dark age is a period for which historians have little in the way of written records, and for which they are thus unable to do much history.  People sometimes speculate on whether we are currently in a dark age.  At first glance, we may appear to have written records, and enough of them will probably be durable enough.  But what if they are gobbledegook, due to confusion around pronouns? In the pictured example, I found 7 sentences containing multiple pronouns, including possessive pronouns.  In 3 of them, the author takes schismatic perspectives within the sentence, coming out with such howlers as "You can now set a password for my yallo account".  But they are not talking about their yallo account.  They are talking about my yallo account, and from their perspective, talking to me, they should say "your".  Again, this is an aspect of language that two-year-olds should be able to master.

JT "their my" nonsense

Image
Another example of the "your my" nonsense produced by corporations calling customers' things "my" things. Let's mark this for pronouns: In total, I've identified 12 correct pronouns, 6 incorrect pronouns, given from the wrong perspective, and one direct clash between a correct one and an incorrect one, in the form of "their my JT account".  This should be a dead giveaway that something is wrong. As well, observe this perfunctory, bossy, yet passive tone that they take.  "all customers are required" to such and such.  Let's try this.  "All telecoms providers are required to provide ipv6 service".  Oh, that didn't work.  "All entities are required to desist from calling other entities' things 'my'".  Oh, that didn't work either. This is the real pronoun crisis.

Guernsey Revenue debacle

Image
I moved to Guernsey in November 2022.  In 2022, I spent fewer than 90 days (nights) in Guernsey, so was expecting to be non-resident for tax purposes for the year.  I was pleased to receive this confirmation, spontaneously, from the tax department, called "Revenue Service": It states simply, albeit with a typo, that my ("[me]") "[..] residential status for tax purposes in [2022] will be 'non-resident'". Imagine my surprise when I received an "Order Imposing a Penalty" dated 2024-03-04.  "In respect of the failure to deliver a return of income for the Year of Charge 2022 within the time specified by a notice given in accordance with the provisions of section 68 of the Law".  Looking at the situation more carefully, it did seem possible that (leaving aside any issue of not having received a notice) one might be non-resident for tax purposes, but still required to submit a tax return, in a particular year. On April 10th I asked thi...

aurigny sets date of birth to 1970-01-01, the start of the Unix epoch, every time, for known customers

Airlines are generally obsessed with making customers enter, and re-enter, information that the airline already has.  They would probably appeal to regulation as an excuse.  But since each airline requires different information to be re-entered, a more plausible explanation would be incompetence, as well as stupidity. The current Aurigny web site was formed chaotically some time in the last year.  The more I hear about this, the worse it sounds.  They had to rush in a different booking system after falling out with a supplier.  As a customer, I experienced forced password resets, because they failed to migrate their customer password database, and the password resets for a time did not work, rendering my account broken.  Apparently, during the period soon after the migration, customers were turning up at the airport ready to fly, and the airline had no record of their booking.  Not for all customers, but for some. The booking web site, as it stands, ma...

TAP Portugal, your-my perspective schism, spam spam spam, Confirmation required, but possible success

Image
In the previous installment of failing to buy a flight ticket from TAP Air Portugal, we determined that the proximal cause of flytap.com's most recent failure to create a new account was our use of plus addressing in an email address, which I'd used as part of a workaround because TAP Air Portugal web site wasn't allowing login with the original account, nor for "rescue" of the account. I needed to provision a new special-purpose shitfrastructure email address, so I thought I'd try icreatedthisaddressbecausetapairportugalereretarded@gmail.com, but this was too long, so I tried tapairportugalareretarded@gmail.com, which is equivalent to tap.air.portugal.are.retarded@gmail.com, because of the normalisation google do with dots, which is fine. I kept switching from Portuguese to English, and the google web sites like accounts.google.com kept switching back, but this didn't matter too much.  My browser does send my language with every request, and if a user has...
