debian 13 coming up

I asked Copilot, a so-called "AI" with a voice interface, when the release of Debian 13 could be expected.

Copilot said mid 2027, because Debian is on a two year release cycle.  I asked it what the current released version of Debian is.  It said 12.  When was that released?  2023.  I asked again about Debian 13, and it said it should be expected around June 2025.  I pointed out that it had just said 2027, and it said yes, my mistake.  I then pointed out that since June 2025 is now in the past, and Debian 13 hasn't been released, Debian 13 can not be expected in June 2025.  Again, it admitted its mistake, and said it will probably be later this summer.  I already knew that.  Copilot makes these kinds of basic mistakes all the time.

I then asked whether it had sight of the debian-developers mailing list, and whether there were any clues on there about how long to go until release.  It said it could see the list, but there weren't really any hints on there.

I decided to upgrade my main desktop anyway prematurely, as it's probably fairly close now.  Mistake.  No need, and broke things.

After rebooting, the computer had no wifi, apparently no wired network, and the bluetooth mouse was no longer working.

In Settings (the GNOME one), the only sections are VPN and Proxy, even though NetworkManager is running.  "ip l" shows "enp86s0", the wired device.  It doesn't show any wifi device.  Connecting a network cable, the wired connection does actually work.

There is no mention of firmware in the log, ie the output of "journalctl".  The last mention of firmware was in May, with stuff like "firmware: direct-loading firmware iwlwifi-so-a0-gf-a0-72.ucode".

"dpkg-query -W | grep firmware" gave "firmware-iwlwifi 20230210-5".  Conveniently, the version is based on a date, which seems old.

"apt-cache show firmware-iwlwifi" reveals it was from firmware-nonfree.  Maybe this is my issue.  I added "non-free-firmware" to each line in "sources.list", and "apt-get update". Now, "apt-get install firmware-iwlwifi"

# apt-get install firmware-iwlwifi

Will reboot and see in a minute.

As for the bluetooth mouse (logitech pebble), Settings -> Bluetooth showed it as connected. But it didn't work. Tried disconnect / forget. It wasn't in the list of available devices. Held button down on pebble until rapid blue light flash, pairing mode. Still did not appear in list. Disabled bluetooth, re-enabled. No. Connected wired mouse.

I can live with a wired mouse. The wifi is because I have three internet connections at home, and they're all shit (starlink, sure very bad dsl, jt dsl alright until router loses connection and doesn't regain it). So I have to switch between the networks a lot, depending on the weather.
