some review notes on x1 carbon 11th gen

  • cost around 2500 GBP(2023). bought 4 initially
  • boots into windows. horrid, it starts talking to you in robot voice
  • ships in card box. lenovo could learn something about experience from apple
  • covered in stickers. sticker of fingerprint over the fingerprint sensor
  • three camera eyes? two seem to be coverable by the slidy thing, tho cover could be transparent, the other not? In any case, red dot is probably annoying to have directly above display
  • ugly intel vpro sticker. why do this?
  • both usb-c ports are on left. one on right would be nice
  • BIOS warns you if using generic usb-c power supply, even tho works fine, have to press ESC. annoyances
  • to boot debian installer cd from usb optical drive:
  • annoying: power button hold for power off has been 10 seconds instead of 5 seconds for several generations now. too easy to suspend by mistake
  • hold power button for 10 seconds
  • press power button
  • press enter to interrupt normal startup
  • loud 1980s beep, then you're up against the clock to choose something, with no timer resets
  • F12 is to choose one-off boot device, but is it too soon?
  • device is listed. pseudo-GUI, but clicking on it does nothing
  • oh, you can click with button not trackpad, FFS
  • then AC adapter warning
  • secure boot violation, okay, at least error message is clear
  • enter then F1 to enter BIOS
  • really bad UI now, doesn't work, is worse than ones in 90s
  • security -> secure boot -> off
  • F10 to save and exit, enter to confirm on yes
  • you can press F12 during boot if you know it, you don't have to press enter first
  • keep having to press ESC all the time due to this AC adapter warning. Why go on about it?
  • now it boots
  • still have to use hardware mouse button not press trackpad during install
  • debian 11 works okay apart from usual firmware crap
  • oh, no it doesn't, it won't suspend on closing of lid. Telling it suspend results in light flashing like in suspend, but thing running. Left in briefcase, got very hot. This is like linux + thinkpad 20 years ago
should just give up and get an m2 apple macbook air?
