you are even more disgusting than before the pandemic, especially you disgusting bloated milky (non-Jap) ones

Trying to have an optimistic take at the start of the pandemic, a friend remarked to me that at least people from now on may have some basic decency around coughing, sneezing, blowing their nose, having a cold, and so on.  No such fucking luck.

Despite covid-papers-please Austria getting obsessed with papers-papers, and people threatening to call the police on non-mask-wearers well after Omicron exceeded 99% of new cases, sneezing out into the open on trains appears to be socially acceptable.  Guy a few seats away just spent a minute mega-sneezing out into the air.  During his performance, his hand moved around in proximity to his face, in a symbolic gesture that showed he felt like he should pretend to try and cover his face.  His being was in spasm.  Once he was done, he kindly got an FFP2 mask and put it on his face.  The only other person visibly disgusted by his behaviour was a Slav on the seats in front (update: later turned out to be a posh Ukrainian refugee).  The carriage then stank of sneeze.  The air was heavy with it.

In Japan, you stay at home when you have an infection like cold or flu, or you wear a mask if you go out while probably infectious (this in normal times).  You treat behaviours like sneezing, coughing, and blowing your nose as toilet activities: you go into the toilet, do what you have to do, flush, wash hands, and back out you go into the world.  Sneezing out into the open on a train is the exact equivalent of pebbledashing every passenger in the carriage.

So why is it not a crime?  Do you think you could get away with pebbledashing everyone on a train?  You would be charged with a crime.

Instead of ludicrous authoritarian overreach that reduces quality of life (travel entry restrictions in the time of omicron, mask mandates in the time of omicron, vaccine mandates in the time of omicron, papers-please to use the ski lift in the time of omicron), how about ludicrous authoritarian overreach that increases quality of life (capital punishment for public sneezers, capital punishment for public coughers, capital punishment for public nose-blowers, with the sentences commuted in all cases if they promise not to do it again)?
