DPG cygnus arms / CMD

 The DPG Cygnus is a gas-lift arm from a decade or so back.  It's since been superceded by another model from the same manufacturer.  I bought a fleet of 10 or so, and they were expensive.  How did they hold up?

This is the full two-joint gas-lift design (there are many other simple metal-on-metal joints on the unit, but two coupled gas-controlled ones).

They sold them in (up-to) 10kg and (up-to) 15kg versions.  At the time, stuff like the 30" dells needed the 15kg version.

You need 4 allen keys to fit and adjust these.  They do supply them, but was it necessary to have so many?  How about one small and one large?

Mechanically, there are issues.  

Monitor rotation involves loosening something at the back, rotating the monitor, then tightening up again at the back.  But this is never exact, so you end up making forcing adjustments when it's tightened.  It's difficult to make just the right adjustment, so you end up going back and forth.  You are certainly not going to be switching back and forth between landscape and portrait.  But it would be nice just to just be able to get it straight and have it stay there.

Tilt has a similar issue, but more insidious.  Even with tight tightening of the relevant hex thing, heavier monitors will tend to creep slowly into a more tilted position, with the top towards the user and the bottom away from the user.  This can happen over several days.

The joint where the main arm's plastic collar fits into the base unit is never a good enough fit, even when the plastic nodule is in the metal dip.  The arm thus always has give from its base, and this amplifies down the length of the arm.

There are also materials quality issues.  

The plastic nodule, that must be put in a metal dip to secure the arm to its base, tends to squidge over time.  It should have been metal.  Once it's squidged, it doesn't go in at all, and the fit at the base of the arm is even worse.

The load-spreaders for under the desk surface have gone rusty.

On the positive side, the VESA plates screw easily to monitors, and then clip on and off easily enough to their mounting point.  But why is this clip not standard?  So if you have a mixture of monitor arms, you end up having to change at the VESA plates and the 4 screws there, not at the clip-on-off plates.

I'm not convinced it's worth the effort compared to just using a monitor on its stand.
