Transferwise's corporate identity is obfuscated (WISE PAYMENTS LIMITED, registered in England Wales, company number 07209813, registered office address 6th Floor, Tea Building, 56 Shoreditch High Street, London, England, E1 6JJ )

 It's a basic requirement of companies offering services to the public, that the corporate identity should be clear.

As a last resort, the company has an obligations, in jurisdicitons I know about, to receive legal notices by mail at its registered office address.  But way before that, the customer needs to know, so as to have a handle on who or what they are dealing with.

There is a trend, noticeable for at least the last decade, for companies to try and obscure their corporate identity.

Let's say that the basic company identifier consists of the company name and jurisdiction of registration.  This is enough to uniquely identify a company.  "Foo Ltd registered in England and Wales", or "Bar Ltd registered in Austria", are identified.  Just "Foo Ltd" or "Bar Ltd" are not.

Fuller company information includes the registered office address and registration number.

Basic company identifier must be included in correspondence (including email), and easily accessible on the web site, either as a footer on most pages, or via an easily-findable contact page.

Fuller company information should be included in the same locations.

Most wise.com web pages don't have a visible footer.  Minimal design, fair enough, as long as I can navigate easily to your corporate info.  After trying everything from the menu, and without any particular rhyme or reason, it transpired that the "Help Centre" page has some info in the footer.  It has the company name but not jurisdiction.  The company name is given as "TransferWise Limited".  Let's guess it's England and Wales.  They do have info about their FCA registration, including a firm number, but they don't include their company number.

Taking a random email from them, it's even worse.  It just says "TransferWise, trading as Wise", which does not even contain a company name, let alone the jurisdiction.  As if on a wind-up mission, they follow this straight up with the offensive "By using our services, you agree to our customer agreements."

 I tried searching a Companies House web site at http://wck2.companieshouse.gov.uk//companysearch?disp=1&frfsh=1635340321&#result for "transferwise".  This returned a lot of companies whose names start with TRANSFER, but none of which contain "TRANSFERWISE".  Seemingly arbitrarily, "TRANSFERWORLD LIMITED" is colored in, in yellow.

 


I don't think that's the one I'm looking for.

Googling in a bit more depth reveals  https://wise.com/it/partners-terms-of-use/
 , dated 2016-11-08, stating "
TransferWise Services are operated by TransferWise Ltd. registered in England and Wales (company number 07209813) with its registered office at 56 Shoreditch High Street, London E1 6JJ".

And searching a different gov.uk site does return "WISE PAYMENTS LIMITED" with Matching previous names "TRANSFERWISE", with half the page taken up by cookies crap.  Thanks, EU!

  •  find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk shows the name change as 2021-06-25, but wise.com's only locatable web page on their corporate identity incorrectly states the old company name and has not been updated since 2016, according to their own dating of the page
  • emails from the wise.com service incorrectly state a truncated version of the old company name

Could the renaming of this company have been handled any less competently by whatever dipshit is going round telling people they work as whatever "C-level" CxO high-flier?
